Be careful. After exactly 7.457 plays on Side 1, it turns into a live hive of bees. I haven't gotten to that many plays on Side 2. It was humming a lot from the other room, though. I've placed in an air-tight ziplock in the meantime.A+++ Very much enjoyed!!!

I've always wanted to listen to Night Vale an old stereo and now I can! It even summons cats!(Cat summoning may vary)

I found this book in my fridge, I sat down and turned the pages, absorbing knowledge, all in all its a great novel.

I do not remembering buying this book. It appeared on my coffee table one morning smelling of rotting meat and ash.Someone keeps leaving pages from it under my pillow while I sleep. Every morning a new one. They are not in order.

A lot of people try to describe Night Vale to those who are unfamiliar, but it isn't easy. Most will resort to comparisons invoking such iconic fictional universes as The Twilight Zone or Twin Peaks. I think I will try this one: It's the monstrosity that would slither from the depths to possess the newborn soul if Douglas Adams had a baby with H.P. Lovecraft. It's absurd, it's funny, it's horrifying, and it's heartbreaking.I'm a long-time follower of the podcast this book is based on, so I of course appreciated its regular interjections from Cecil and the cameos from (and new insights into!) such town regulars as Old Woman Josie, Carlos the Scientist, Mayor Dana Cardinal, and that guy Steve Carlsberg. (Get it together, Steve.) And of course I like callbacks to the Faceless Old Woman Who Secretly Lives in Your Home, the Glow Cloud, and the town rivalry with Desert Bluffs, as well as Cecil's continual smugness about how hot and talented his scientist boyfriend is. All the in-jokes are there for us, while just being random weirdness if you're new to the world: You pay your bill at Big Rico's with a certain strange ritual, crises generally resolve before Cecil is done reporting on them, and mountains aren't real (or maybe they are, but that's controversial). And some food is invisible.Plot-wise, it's lovely to follow characters for much longer than a podcast episode--and see things through their perspective without necessarily feeling that Cecil is narrating their experiences--and I enjoyed how everything was weird and not necessarily satisfying but still leaves you with that feeling that Something Happened. But it's not just weird; it's got some honestly gorgeous images in it that smack you sideways unexpectedly. It's haunting. I'll share some of these quotes at the end, where the concepts are both bizarre and beautiful. The scene of Diane and Jackie joining forces to escape the library was incredibly exciting, and their relationship was deliciously complicated--as was Jackie's relationship with her mother--and it was funny that the cover art on a biography of Helen Hunt tried to attack them. Oh, and remember, scientists are pack animals, and you have to whisper a secret into the car's cup holder to start the ignition. It's just really interesting that the book hits the nail on the head about Cecil's voice letting us let things go. We let go of questions even as his voice brings us more of them. Also, the tradition continues for intern work at the radio station to be a dangerous job with a high mortality rate. Not to mention one of your duties is editing Cecil's slash fiction. Before I share my favorite quotes, I want to talk about some of the important social points in this book. Most notably, it deals heavily with a father who abandoned his partners and children, how those mothers who raised those children coped, how the father cannot expect to just reappear after the hard work is done and be equally important to the children, and how said father can still be a helpful, useful, "good" person while still having done something that damaged his families. This was represented with the character Troy literally being multiple versions of himself, dozens of Troys everywhere, without a single one staying to raise his children. I loved Diane's speech regarding her son's wanting to find his father: I raised you for fifteen years. I fed you and clothed you. I loved you and still do. I love you because you have been with me for fifteen years. I am your mother because we have been together your whole childhood. I have earned you as my son. Troy does not get to be your father simply because he participated in your creation. Troy does not get to earn your love as a son because you are biologically his. I have done the work. I have put in the time. I have loved you. Troy does not get to be my equal in your life because he has not earned it. I need to protect myself. And I need to protect you. This is incredibly relevant to anyone who's raised a child after the other partner left, and that's become common in many people's households. There is also a really interesting, related point in this story about how family is what becomes from the relationships you cultivate; a father is not a father just because he contributed genetic material, but someone who did not contribute genetic material can be more of a father sometimes. Characters who are not technically related can become like sisters because of what they develop. Many of us in the real world can relate to this too. It's also refreshing that when it's revealed Troy left Diane, Jackie makes a remark about Troy being bad because of it, which makes Diane feel validated. She'd always before felt that she was to blame for "making a mistake" by being with him, but the text explicitly puts the onus on Troy. Wonderful.Relatedly, I also really enjoy how consistently the character Jackie experienced condescension and dismissal because of others' perception of her age. As a perpetual nineteen-year-old, Jackie knows nothing but being discounted because of her supposed immaturity, and it was interesting how Diane's knee-jerk reaction was to boss Jackie around and immediately tune her input out. There was quite a lot of this, and after Diane learned how it felt to receive this treatment, she wasn't so hasty to dish it out to Jackie or her son. It's very important for adults to realize how their advice comes across and how easy it is to ignore someone's input if it's clear they don't respect you.And of course, in the midst of so many extremely weird things happening and extremely normal things being taken for weird, same-sex relationships are never invoked as odd at all. Pretty much every relationship or potential relationship just is what it is, with Diane being as willing to imagine that her son might have a crush on a boy as she was to imagine he might have a crush on a girl. And when her son thinks she might be dating, the potential relationship she calls out as a shield is a woman named Dawn, but her son believes she's saying "Don," and neither possibility is weird or remarkable. The words "gay," "straight," and "bisexual" are never used, and while some people think it's frustrating to have queer relationships without labeling them, I think it fits well with the tone. (Also, there is a sort of nod to asexuality in there; a character is describing what happens when kids grow up, and remarks, "and they get interested in boys and girls, or they don't, and anyway they change." No acknowledgment is made of nonbinary genders, but this was an unusual acknowledgment that growing up does not automatically mean we all form those kinds of relationships.)Okay, and these are my favorite quotes. On showering: You will smell must and soap, and feel a stab of panic about how alone you are. It will be like most showers you've taken. On angels: All of the angels in Night Vale live with Josie out by the car lot. There are no angels in Night Vale.On pet care: Now it was time to feed those items that were alive. Some of the items were alive. Some of them were dogs, and some weren't.On great deals: Get out to Lenny's for their big grand opening sale. Find eight government secrets and get a free kidnapping and personality reassignment so that you'll forget you found them!On Diane: Diane was like most people. Most people are.On avocados: The avocado was, of course, fake, as all avocados are.On invisible consumables: The Moonlite All-Nite Diner along Route 800 served okay coffee. Okay pies. Some of the pies and coffee were invisible, and, for the people who like invisible pie and invisible coffee, this was a real plus. Here's what: if you like a thing, and only one place in town serves that thing, you're going to be pretty excited by that thing, regardless of quality. On the Faceless Old Woman: The faceless old woman who secretly lives in their home crawled by on the ceiling, but neither of them noticed. On sponsored content: And now a word from our sponsors. Or not now, but later. Much later. You won't know it when it happens. It'll be just one of the many words you'll encounter that day. But it will come leaden with unseen meaning and consequence, and it will slowly spread throughout your life, invisibly infecting every light moment with its heaviness. Our sponsors cannot be escaped. You will see their word. And you will never know.On science fiction: No one knows why science fiction is kept separately from the rest of the nonfiction. Tradition is a powerful thing. These shelves were much less censored than the main nonfiction section, since science fiction tended to be about day-to-day stuff that everyone already knew.On the nature of the world: The world is terrifying. It always is. But Cecil reminded her that it was okay to relax in a terrifying world.More sponsored content: And now a word from our sponsors. Having trouble sleeping? Are you awake at all hours? Do birds live in you? Are you crawling with insects? Is your skin jagged and hard? Are you covered in leaves and gently shaking in the gentle breeze? You sound like a tree. You are perfectly healthy. Also, you don't need to sleep. You're a tree, a very very smart tree. Are you listening to the radio? Is a human assisting you? What plan do you have for our weak species? Please, tree, I beg of you to spare me. Please, tree. Spare me. This message has been brought to you by Old Navy. Old Navy: What's Going to Happen to My Family? On children: We don't have our children. We have the faint, distorted echoes of our children that this town sent back to us.

Welcome to Night Vale: A Novel is the first novel in the Night Vale series (based off the popular podcast of the same name) written by Joseph Fink and Jeffrey Cranor. Welcome to Night Vale: A Novel expands the universe of the podcast as we follow two women, Diane Crayton and Jackie Fierro, whose (already weird) lives get turned upside down when a man in a tan suit with a deerskin briefcase gives them both a piece of paper with the words "KING CITY" written on it. Their individual quests for answers will lead them on a journey that will change how they look at themselves, and at their families. Read more…First things first, I adore this book. It's honestly everything I wanted it to be, and even more. Fink and Cranor do a great job of taking the absurdity and humor of the podcast and making it work as a novel. The novel isn't told from Cecil's point of view - like the podcast is - and that's the best decision they could have made. By changing the point of view, they've opened up the world of Night Vale more than ever. Now we have the chance to experience life as a "regular" citizen of Night Vale. And the fact that the book actually jumps between two points of view is even better, giving us a nice variety of characters and experiences. One point of view is that of Jackie Fierro, a pawn shop owner who has been nineteen for as long as she can remember. The other point of view is Diane Crayton, a mother of a son who can change his appearance at will and desperately wants to know information about his dad. The book alternates between their points of view in nearly every chapter, and it's utilized with panache, especially when Jackie and Diane start interacting with each other. I have a soft spot for stories that will show the same event from multiple points of view. The prose itself is reminiscent of the podcast, which itself is reminiscent of writers like Douglas Adams. Again, I think this was a smart move for Fink and Cranor to make. It can be hard making a transition from one medium of entertainment to another, especially when you're changing the entire format of the story. There was always the possibility that without Cecil as the narrator, this wouldn't have worked. But it does, partially because the prose is so reminiscent of the language used in the podcast that it feels like an extension of what fans already hear and love.As for the story itself, Welcome to Night Vale really is one of those books that defies genres. One part brilliant whodunnit, another part emotional family drama, another part absurdist humor, the book manages to combine a whole bunch of genres that often aren't combined into this melting pot of entertaining literature. The mystery itself is interesting enough, and it's only heightened by the excellent, dynamic characters written by Fink and Cranor. The story benefits from not tying itself too heavily into things that have happened in the podcast, aside from answering one of the biggest questions in the podcast: just who is the man in the tan jacket? People who have never heard the podcast before are given enough information about the man in the tan jacket for this part of the storyline to be meaningful, but fans of the podcast will really get a lot out of this as they uncover the mystery behind this well-known and beloved character. It's a quick and easy read, full of twists and turns and emotional moments that always end up feeling earned. No part of this book feels like a cash grab, adapting a popular property into another medium. Instead, it feels like a genuine expansion of the universe with an original, moving, and entertaining story to tell that couldn't have been told with the confines of the podcast.Welcome to Night Vale: A Novel is an enjoyable read for anyone who is already a fan of the podcast. Part Twilight Zone, part X-Files, part This American Life, Night Vale manages to bridge all these disparate elements together into a cohesive and entertaining story that appeals to a wide audience. I recommend it to anyone who likes science fiction, absurdist humor, Douglas Adams-style books, is already a fan of the podcast, or who just likes a good whodunnit with excellently written dynamic characters.

I'm late to the Night Vale party. A friend recommended the podcast, but I didn't want to commit to wading through its hundreds of episodes, and I can read faster than most people talk. I caught this on sale, fortunately, because I don't think I will ever finish this book. Night Vale is weird for the sake of being weird. It reads like abstractionist, science fiction stream of consciousness. Reading it felt like work.

Review

Whether your interest is scientific or you merely wonder what a giant cat whose teeth inspired the name 'he who brings devastation'looked like, this book is not to be missed. (Luke Hunter BioScience)A well-written, informative, and beautifully illustrated guide to the large cats, both extinct and extant. (Blaire Van Valkenburgh The Quarterly Review of Biology)A very interesting book―a cross between popular natural history and a coffee table volume. (F. S. Szalay Choice)Beautifully illustrated.... Clearly, this work has been a labour of love for both author and illustrator. (Douglas Palmer New Scientist)Antón's illustrations, refreshingly 'based directly on the skeletal evidence available and... not merely slightly altered versions of living cats with the addition of large fangs,'are perhaps the finest ever published. They are intertwined with Turner's cogent text in an eloquent demonstration of the interplay between art and science, paleontology and zoology, predator and prey, ecology and behavior, and anatomy and geography. After reading several books on human evolution, and as a cat lover, I was looking for a book that could enlighten me on cat evolution. I'm only on page 30, but I can see that this book goes into significant depth, and explains evolutionary and archaeological processes sufficiently for a novice to follow, while giving me a whole bunch of fascinating new information. And the illustrations are wonderful, both the drawings and the painted plates, just what I need to fully visualize the features discussed in the text.

Beautifully written and illustrated, this book brings the still-controversial evolution of the big cats to a broad audience, which should include those who love the small cats who have woven their way into our lives. The book surveys the fossil evidence for the evolution of the big cats, and in so doing, explains in lucid prose and beautiful illustrations what the various parts of a cat are for, and how they evolved. You'll learn, for example, that cats' dentition shows that the have always been flesh eaters, unlike dogs and hyenas, whose dentition enables them to crush bones. Accordingly, cats' teeth are arranged with forward incisors for detail work and dragging, canines for administering lethal wounds, and -- after a gap in which no teeth appear, a set of scissor-like molars for severing flesh. Next time you toss a treat to your house cat, watch carefully; they'll likely chop it into pieces, if they can, with their incisors, but failing that they'll raise and tilt their heads so that the morsel in question falls within reach of the scissors, and CHOP! You'll learn much more -- what tails are for, how claws retract, and which of a cat's senses are the most highly developed. (Tip: It's not their sense of smell.) Written by a distinguished paleontologist and illustrated by an equally distinguished scientific artist, this volume is not without humor, albeit of a gallows sort: Two of the illustrations portray hapless hominids -- Lucy's husband and uncle, perhaps -- being unceremoniously dragged away for a feast. Yet one has to wonder who will be judged, in the end, to be the crueler species. It is the very beauty of cats that may well spell their doom, as their increasingly rare coats are prized by those who wish only to acquire, at whatever cost. This is a book not only for all who love cats, but far more broadly, all those who love science, and wonder about humanity's role in the world.

My grandson loves the big cats and had expressed the desire to have something regarding the saber toothed cats too. This book had very good reviews, even for younger kids. My grandson is grown but is mentally handicapped and is a voracious reader. I showed him the info on this book on Amazon's site and he said he would like to have it. It arrived today and the book is beautiful, with lots of illustrations and he can hardly wait to start on it. I encourage him to read and anything he wants to read I try to get for him. I was glad to be able to find something for him on this subject that was not meant for very young kids. He will enjoy it I know. My thanks to Amazon for having such a huge variety of books on most any subject.

Your decision to buy this book comes down to your interest in sabre tooths. It is certainly not a popularized, sensationalist account which is going to spark any interest in a casual audience (nor is it a dry, overly academic paleontological tome dealing with humerus length and bone density.) The amazing thing about the book is that is deals in depth with the many different families of sabre tooth (not just the Smilodon well known from American museums, thanks to the La Brea tar pits.) Topics discussed include everything from hunting techniques to possible causes for their extinction.

A perfect book to understand the big cats and their evolution as our most iconic predators. It also is a great reference for artwork and is lavishly illustrated with some of Mauricio Anton's best work, both sketch-wise and in color plates.

For the lay reader - such as me - the welter of taxonomical and anatomical details with which this book is filled could perhaps have made it very boring. However, the fine drawing and the speculative detail about reconstrued ecology and behavior made the book a light read, even comic at times, when you discover that sabertoothed cats were a kind of lions and tigers "on steroids", with heavily muscled forelimbs and shoulders allowing them to immobilize the prey to the ground in order to deliver a devastating neck bite that would close a windpipe and sever bloodvessels neatly and quickly. Very funny to think that evolution could have taken this alternative path of turning the gracile feline form into something like a BB contest...

Technical book with lots of terminology to follow, but not to difficult to read and well illustrated.

It is more on the technical side but does contain good explanations of the more technical parts. That being said it is a highly informative book. It is a great insight into the evolution of the big cats. The illustrations in the book are amazingly well done. I was a little disappointed that the book did not cover other wild cats but I quickly got over it while reading through this terrific book.Just remember it is a fairly technical book so if you are looking for a easy to read book on cats I would advise looking elsewhere. But if you are looking for an in depth description of Felid evolution complete with plenty of facts and theories you have found the perfect book.

This book satisfied my need for information about In-N-Out for now. I was hoping for more insider information but it is reasonable to understand why such a private and unusual family would make that difficult. The story is told somewhere between a business analyst view of the fast food industry history and growth and a tabloid expose on a family with skeletons in the closet. It comes up a bit short from both points of view. The business analysis feels like the elements one would find in a college term paper or maybe a master’s thesis with In-N-Out as the anchor. The family history has too much feel of gossip versus a candid picture. The way the two are woven together feels a little choppy.Having described the book in more negative terms than it probably deserves, I found it valuable to satisfy my curiosity about In-N-Out and would recommend it as a resource for anyone with similar interests. I am looking forward to the person that is able to write that definitive book on Lynsi as I believe her life sums up what In-N-Out is really all about.

Stacy Perman's In-N-Out Burger - A Behind-the-Counter Look at the Fast-Food Chain That Breaks All the Rules is a fun spin through the lives of the family and formation of the culture behind the rise and continued success of the regionally famous In-N-Out Burger chain. While little differentiates the In-N-Out story in the annals of American retail successes, the book capitalizes on the habitual secrecy of the Snyder family in revealing much of what occurred behind the scenes to make In-N-Out Burger one of the country's most loved fast-food restaurants. Perman's meticulous research and the details of a number of interviews fill in many of the blanks about the founders, their descendents, and the influence on business and regular Americans of the fast-food revolution in general. If you do not know what an In-N-Out Burger restaurant is, you probably are not reading this review or seriously mulling over a purchase of Perman's book. To this point you may want to consider a more nationally relevant retail story. Robert Spector's book about Nordstrom's, the high-end department store chain, is an excellent read (The Nordstrom Way, 1999). Equally interesting is Sam Walton's autobiography (written with John Huey, 1992), essentially a timeline of the events behind the founding and rise of the Walmart department store chain. Another good book is Lee Iacocca's autobiography (written with William Novak, 1984), which is the auto executive's telling of his time at Ford and Chrysler and his family's connections to the small, but beloved, Pennsylvania restaurant chain Yocco's.The first half of Perman's book is largely dedicated to the chain's founding and its progress through the 1940s, 1950s, and 1960s. It is rich in details from the Snyders' humble midwestern beginnings, the advent of World War II, and the start of the Baby Boom era. Perman gamely mixes in juicy tidbits from Ray Kroc's early escapades surrounding McDonald's and often mentions Carl Karcher's influence (of the Carl Jr. and Hardee's fame) on the California fast-food market. But the book takes on a more tabloid feel in the later pages with the revelation of drug abuse by one of the Snyder sons and embarrassing litigation over the family succession. This seediness is hardly Perman's fault. The truth, as is often the case, is stranger than fiction. Unfortunately the historical tapestry at the beginning and the later lurid details and embarrassing behavior are still just a thin coating over an even thinner capitalist premise. At its central core, In-N-Out Burger: A Behind-the-Counter Look is merely a tale of two basic business aphorisms.One. If you bust your ass, sell a quality product, and are not just in it to score a fortune from exiting the business, you can build one heck of company with few real rivals. Two. If your company culture and business process is solid, the company will survive in spite of the inevitable degeneration of work ethic by founding family descendents or the employment of professional managers with few entrepreneurial skills. Some may also be disappointed by the revelation that several Snyder family members (including the current sole heir) have arrogantly attributed much of their success to the supposed manifest destiny due religious fundamentalists everywhere (as opposed to hard work, fortuitous economic timing, and good business sense). This tortuous reasoning stands in sharp contrast to, for example, the earnest reasoning behind the creation of the wildly successful Chik-fil-A (founded by by S. Truett Cathy) from the start as an enterprise with strong ingrained religious values.Do not misunderstand. If you are a In-N-Out Burger enthusiast (as the reviewer is, despite being an East Coast resident), you will be thoroughly entertained by many of the book's interesting revelations. Perman's tome is a mandatory read for the loyal In-N-Out customer or long-time California resident. This is the key to figuring out why this book was published in the first place, instead of a history (for example) of Five Guys, Ledo Pizza, or Nathan's Hot Dogs. Perman's efforts had a sizable guaranteed contemporary audience. As a result, In-N-Out Burger: A Behind-The-Counter Look is tasty and filling, but not really satisfying. Considered as just an American rags-to-riches business story, the book falls flat. But similar to the Pavlovian obsession we have for high-calorie and questionably-nutritional fast-food, we crave the sordid details of the institutions and people that enthrall us.And next time this reviewer is in California, you can be sure he will get his In-N-Out food fix.

After finishing this book, I can only figure that some of the negative reviews of this book must be from folks expecting something completely different. For In-N-Out fans like myself, an insightful look into one of the most successful Southern California institutions of the last half century. While I have heard bits and pieces about the inner workings of In-N-Out as a San Gabriel Valley native and INO customer for almost 40 years, this book does a good job of connecting the dots and filling in the blanks. While I agree somewhat with the criticism in some of the reviews that Ms. Perman occasionally repeats things in various chapters of the book, I didn't find it particularly bothersome. In summary, a great read for anyone who loves In-N-Out, craves an insight into why it has been wildly successful, and hopes it never changes.

Wow!!! As a teenager girl I was a fan, even have him as my favorite artist in my memory book! It was nice to see the normal side of him. It was amazing that the author got the privilege to get to know him. As much as society portrayed him to be an awful individual. He's still gracing the world with his presence!

This is a book worth reading! He has a soft side to me, that you wouldnt possibly see or hear when listening to his music! I read the book in one day. I have also been recommending everyone to read it!

This book deserves 5 stars hands down! The author gave a honest insight of her experience with the legendary TupacShakur. The story envelopes you & takes you into their world & you get to know another side of 2pac from a woman's perspective. The author is also an excellent writer, her poetry is flawless & so is Pac's. Reading this book helped me learn 2pac from an unbiased perception & I enjoyed every poem, letter, chapter & every word. I recommend this book to anyone who wants to learn another side of the legendary TupacShakur...I love you 2pac!!!

I was not expecting this book to be this good. Very detailed with letters to back up the author's words. Great read!

I think this should be mandatory reading for anyone looking to start a company. Great read, I'd highly recommend it.

If you want to know why The Hard Thing About Hard Things: Building a Business When There Are No Easy Answers is worth buying, here’s the money quote.“Almost all management books focus on how to do things correctly, so you don’t screw up, these lessons provide insight into what you must do after you have screwed up.”If you’re planning to start a company, whether it’s a high-tech company or the kinds of companies that I started and ran, read this book. If you’re going to be someone in charge of anything in any kind of a company, read this book.If all you want are the big ideas, or Horowitz’ philosophy, you can get them from his blog and articles. You don’t need to buy this book. But if you want a handy advisor for that 3 AM moment when you’re thinking about firing someone you like, buy the book. Keep it handy. I’ve had those moments and I wish I’d had it.The Hard Thing About Hard Things has a whole lot of information packed inside it. You can read it from cover to cover and get a lot of value. Or, you can think of it as a series of conversations with bosses and mentors. Horowitz had a lot of those. And his mentors included people like Andy Grove and Jim Barksdale. The wisdom that he shares and credits to them, reminds me of the wisdom that I received from bosses and mentors and which I later shared with protégés. It’s real, it’s practical, and it will help. I think that the discussion of things like firing and laying people off are more than worth the price of the book by themselves. And they’re only a small part of what’s in The Hard Thing About Hard Things. Here are a few quotes from the book to give you an idea of what you’re in for. You don’t have to be a CEO to use what’s here, even though Horowitz aims the book at CEOs. Substitute “leader” for “CEO” in most quotes and use the wisdom.Quotes from The Hard Thing About Hard Things “That’s the hard thing about hard things— there is no formula for dealing with them.”“People always ask me, ‘What’s the secret to being a successful CEO?’ Sadly, there is no secret, but if there is one skill that stands out, it’s the ability to focus and make the best move when there are no good moves. It’s the moments where you feel most like hiding or dying that you can make the biggest difference as a CEO.”“Don’t take it personally. The predicament that you are in is probably all your fault. You hired the people. You made the decisions. But you knew the job was dangerous when you took it. Everybody makes mistakes. Every CEO makes thousands of mistakes. Evaluating yourself and giving yourself an F doesn’t help.”“One of the most important management lessons for a founder/ CEO is totally unintuitive. My single biggest personal improvement as CEO occurred on the day when I stopped being too positive.”“Management purely by numbers is sort of like painting by numbers— it’s strictly for amateurs.”“The first rule of organizational design is that all organizational designs are bad.”“Embrace the struggle.”There are plenty more in The Hard Thing About Hard Things: Building a Business When There Are No Easy Answers.

This is a book for CEOs of venture capital backed or public companies with 10+ employees. Unless this you are this CEO, this book will not be useful nor give you good advice; it will merely be interesting or a “what if” book.It is probably even more narrow: CEOs of venture capital or public TECH companies IN THE SILICON VALLEY IN CALIFORNIA. The advice is very specific to Silicon Valley culture and a specific job in that culture. I’ve worked in Silicon Valley for 20+ years as an engineer and founded my own tech startup 2 years ago, yet this book still does not apply to me because I do not have the exact job described in this book. That being said, the book made a lot sense, seemed to cover new ground (especially CEO psychology and emotions) and was a quick read. It’s a must-read for the 500 CEOs or so that it’s intended for. My one doubt is that “Is It Okay To Hire From Your Friend’s Company?” is probably illegal in California.I got this book on the recommendation from Jumpcut Viral Academy and they should not have recommended it nor do I recommend that others read it. It’s simply not applicable nor useful to non-CEOs. But it’s easy to be star-struck by the author and inappropriately recommend this book as something that it is not. It’s an “already CEO” guide, not about self motivation, not about how to get promoted to CEO, not how to help your CEO, not how to be a VP, not how to network, not how to get funding, not how to start a business and on and on.

“Every time I read a management or self-help book, I find myself saying, “That’s fine, but that wasn’t really the hard thing about the situation.” The hard thing isn’t setting a big, hairy, audacious goal. The hard thing is laying people off when you miss the big goal. The hard thing isn’t hiring great people. The hard thing is when those “great people” develop a sense of entitlement and start demanding unreasonable things. The hard thing isn’t setting up an organizational chart. The hard thing is getting people to communicate within the organization that you just designed. The hard thing isn’t dreaming big. The hard thing is waking up in the middle of the night in a cold sweat when the dream turns into a nightmare. The problem with these books is that they attempt to provide a recipe for challenges that have no recipes. There’s no recipe for really complicated, dynamic situations. There’s no recipe for building a high-tech company; there’s no recipe for making a series of hit songs; there’s no recipe for playing NFL quarterback; there’s no recipe for running for president; and there’s no recipe for motivating teams when your business has gone to crap. That’s the hard thing about hard things— there is no formula for dealing with them.” This is how Horowitz begins.Horowitz gives advice to entrepreneurs. And it is not business school-like advice indeed. “People often ask me how we’ve managed to work efficiently across three companies over eighteen years. Most business relationships either become too tense to tolerate or not tense enough to be productive after a while. Either people challenge each other to the point where they don’t like each other or they become complacent about each other’s feedback and no longer benefit from the relationship. With Marc and me, even after eighteen years, he upsets me almost every day by finding something wrong with my thinking, and I do the same for hi. It works.”I began my review by quoting the first page. I will quote here with his final page: “Hard things are hard because there are no easy answers or recipes. They are hard because your emotions are at odds with your logic. They are hard because you don’t know the answer and you cannot ask for help without showing weakness. When I first became a CEO, I genuinely thought that I was the only one struggling. Whenever I spoke to other CEOs, they all seemed like they had everything under control. Their businesses were always going “fantastic” and their experience was inevitably “amazing”. But as I watched my peers’ fantastic, amazing businesses go bankrupt and sell for cheap, I realized I was probably not the only one struggling.” […] “Embrace your weirdness, your background, your instinct. If the keys are not there, they do not exist.”The book is not an easy read. So you may not enjoy the book if you do not need to apply it now. Still it is a great book.

The next sections explain how to use the registry for hardware control, networking configuration, user administration, and domain server management and detail how to manage Windows 95 users with the System Policy Editor. A final section covers third-party registry tools and extensively documents the registry keys. The author covers both the Windows 95 and NT registries but, because of their many differences, discusses them in separate sections. This approach makes sense for administrators who will probably need to work with both types of operating systems. If you're trying to master the registry, the core system-configuration database in Windows NT and Windows 95, you'll appreciate this book's clear writing and technical depth.
